Edmond Shipway has been operating overseas since the early 1970’s. During that time we participated in the early development of the Middle East, culminating in the building of the Teaching Hospital for the University of Rijadd. The work in this area enabled us to open a permanent office in Cyprus to service commissions obtained.
Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s Edmond Shipway has worked on numerous projects through Europe for the aerospace industry and general retailing. The last ten years has seen us continue in Western Europe and expand our services to Eastern Europe, the Indian sub-continent and Asia.
Our appointment as Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors for the £350m International Exhibition & Conference Centre in Malaysia signalled the opportunity of opening an office in Malaysia and establishing a local business which has developed to provide work throughout Peninsular Malaysia and the Eastern States of Borneo. Our work with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office has developed with new commissions in Sri Lanka, Slovenia, Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Georgia.
In 2007 we opened our first office in the CIS in Almaty, Kazakhstan where we are providing both Project Management and Cost Management services on numerous major Residential, Hotel & Leisure and Commercial projects. In addition the office has completed the Project Management of seven major Master Plans for multi use developments, including the design of two new towns. The office is also working on support services to the Oil and Gas Industry in the west of the state, around the Caspian Sea area.
Major commissions including the HSBC Headquarters Building in Tbilisi and a new British Embassy will enable us to have a presence in Georgia for a number of years, thus giving us further opportunity to expand our international operations.
Most recently we have established an office in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, as the Indian construction market is vast and the economy is still in an upward cycle. According to Global Construction 2020, India’s economy will grow by a massive 164% in the next 10 years and will overtake Japan as the third fastest growing market in the world.
The increasing workload overseas has presented many challenges, particularly in working across a wide cultural and economic diversity. Working internationally requires people who can not only undertake the technical challenge, but can also deal with managing and working with, a multi-racial team of both international and local consultants. Situations can often be frustrating yet with understanding, patience and strong focus on the project delivery we have been able to successfully deliver schemes with certainty of cost and programme.
In the world wide property boom of the last ten years, Client’s focused on delivering their project at any cost so long as it could be sold at a profit. The development world of today is a different place. Obtaining finance for new or existing projects can be difficult. Financial institutions who serviced the boom are now left with assets of far lesser value than their outstanding loans, not knowing whether to cut their losses and sell or minimise their losses, or make a profit, from undertaking the completion of the project them selves.
In either case the expertise of Edmond Shipway in undertaking relevant due diligence exercises, in developing procurement strategies for the completion of the projects and in Project and Cost Managing those projects through to completion, will bring real value to the Client and his project.
How do we do this? We do this through a commitment to servicing our Client’s needs, in whatever market place exists. In addition, we have almost 50 years experience in understanding the elements that impact on project cost and can advise how best to manage them to reduce risk and add value.
We seek to expand our overseas operations, where the experience gained can be brought to projects and real value can be added - in an environment where local issues and cultures are respected.
